Standard Laboratory Water Testing
A big part of the water treatment process involves testing water for pollutants and contaminants. This process sets the baseline for all filtering procedures necessary, and allows professional water treatment staff to monitor and update conditions.

Probably the simplest form of water testing, jar testing is just what it sounds like: Testing of a sample of water from a larger reservoir using smaller jars. It’s a very basic way to determine which chemicals and treatments might be necessary for your larger treatment facility, and to optimize chemical dosages.
Different chemicals can be added to the same water in different jars, including a coagulant (usually a metallic salt) designed to destabilize colloidal suspensions. Chemicals are mixed in with the water samples and then allowed to settle, after which analysis can be done on the supernatant, a clear liquid that settles on the top of the solution.

This test involves some of the same processes as the standard jar test, but is designed specifically to test for levels of particles settling at the bottom of liquid following the addition of a coagulant – a process called sedimentation. This gives staff a chance to predict the levels of sedimentation they’ll need to remove in their larger reservoirs of treated water.
